• Electrolysis is an invasive technique in which a needle penetrates the skin into the hair follicle whereas the only thing penetrating into the skin in laser treatment is the light energy and therefore the laser is less painful.
• The cost of each session is comparable but electrolysis is a comparatively lengthy process having longer session lengths and more number of sessions adding to the overall cost.
• Electrolysis cannot guarantee permanent hair freedom because it depends on the accuracy of the needle insertion into the hair follicle. If 100% accurate, it kills it. Because electrolysis focuses on one hair at a time, it can be a tedious process.
• Laser/IPL hair removal on other hand has shown at least 80% permanent hair reduction of hairs after completion of treatment. Other advantages of laser/IPL hair removal are that it can be used effectively for the treatment of large areas like the back, chest and legs etc. It can also be used on the face with excellent results.
• The latest forms of IPL work equally well on both light and dark hairs and skins (excepting for white/grey hair), whereas the earlier lasers worked only best on dark hair/light skin. I have the latest IPL technology and this removes one of the big differentiators between electrolysis and laser/IPL.
